A run of words — the block everything else is measured against.
Plain *italic* **bold** ~~strike~~ `code` text.
A line the author ended\
and the line after it.
A newline goes back in the form it arrived in. A break the author asked for is
written \ at the end of the line; two trailing spaces are read as the same
break and never written back. A newline that was only wrapping stays a bare
newline, so a hard-wrapped file gains no backslashes by being saved.
align (left | center | right) rides the trailing comment —
Centred.<!--sb align="center"--> — on a paragraph with no list role only. A
list item is a paragraph carrying a list style, so the comment there is kept
verbatim and draws nothing. align="left" is never written, but one written by
hand is kept.
Empty paragraphs are first-class: one blank line separates two blocks, and each additional blank line in the gap is one empty paragraph. An empty paragraph has no line to trail a comment on, so its alignment is not representable and neither side invents one.
