index.md is an ordinary authored page — the project's entry point, expected rather than manufactured. No folder gets a generated listing at any depth. Navigation, trees and contents are derived in memory and drawn; they are never written to disk, so no marker comments, no ownership regions and no rebuild rules exist. This supersedes the maintained-list mechanism and its two marker lines entirely.
