A horizontal rule between two runs of content.
Before the break.
---
After it.
Canonical form is exactly three dashes, no spaces. ***, ___ and longer runs
are read and become --- on the next save.
A divider carries no attributes of its own — there is no width, no tone and no
align. It may be indented by the free-indent comment like any other block.
A --- line at the very top of a file opens the frontmatter and is not a
divider; the first divider a document can hold stands after the frontmatter
closes.
